My Affiliate Marketing Experience…thus far

Posted by Justin under Personal, affiliate marketing

I originally started this site not only as a personal blog, but also to keep a record of my personal experience with affiliate marketing. I thought it would be neat to see where I end up while having a record of most everything from when I started.  So far I’ve been at this for about a month now on and off.  I must say it is no easy task, I have a much higher appreciation for all those ads you people see on the internet and get annoyed by.  Hell, I used to even use adblockers all the time, so I was completely oblivious.

The truth is it is a lot of work.  Just in the last few weeks in my off-time (which I don’t have much of lately!) I’ve been building sites, researching, finding products, researching, joining affiliate networks, and then some more damn researching!  It’s seriously like I’m working 2 full-time jobs right now.

With one of the jobs being the military my hours are not very well defined, some days you might work just 8 hours then others you end up working 14-16, and then there’s the rare occasion where you’ll only work 3 or so hours.  From there I come home and spend anywhere from 1-2 hours reading/updating my web-sites to a full blown 12 hours reading anything I can related to marketing on the internet, programming, web-design, product research, everything.  It’s pretty daunting when you think about it.  This also leaves very little room for sleep, most days I feel like a zombie wandering the earth…in BDU’s, haha.

Now this may not be the case with every Joe out there who’s dabbling with affiliate marketing but I’m trying to be a one-man operation, and I must say it’s EXTREMELY time consuming.  If I had half a brain (or maybe the money :) ) I’d outsource all this grunt work to the professionals.  This would be the move of a time-concious man, I feel I must get a hazy idea of what’s going on at all levels before I start outsourcing though.  I’ve seen too many posts/articles by people in my shoes that just give up because they lose a bunch of money or they just don’t know what they’re doing.

With my break from most anything computer-related other than movies and music, officially becoming a “chat-tard,” I needed to play catch-up with the extraordinary amount of advancement the internet  has seen while I was in the void.  In these few short weeks I’ve become re-acclimated to javascript, php, html (duh), and of course as already stated a vast array of internet marketing terms.

Well anyway, lets get down to brass tax, you might be asking “Have you earned anything yet?”

My answer would be…

“not really.”

Honestly I’ve got no positive income from this venture thus far if you look at it from a return-on-investment perspective.  I’ve probably spent around $100 registering domains and on hosting/etc.  My income from all the sites/etc doing that is around $10.  This is not so bad though from what I read, I really only have about two web-sites going at the moment that are even half-assed developed,  with a number of domains with nothing on them.  Along with that I’ve read multiple stories from people saying it took them a year to make even $100.

To wrap it up I’ll ask you to visit my affiliate networks list if you’re at all interested in affiliate marketing.  They have all been great to me thus far but it’s not like I’m a big money-maker for them…

yet ;) .

Keep up the work man, it takes some time to get everything rolling and set up. Before you know it you’ll be getting a few sales a day and a good side income going. When you feel like you’re failing keep truckin, everyone fails before they make it, trust me, it’s worth the wait :D
